TikTok’s Lourd Asprec Immigrated from the Philippines and Became a Star

Written by

Lourd Asprec moved to the U.S. from the Philippines at age 10. He started TikTok because he believed it was his destiny to be an influencer.

“My dream was always to become an influencer, and I blew up on TikTok with the single video of the cups on my feet. And it was kind of ridiculous.” he said.

He got most of his followers from a video where a spider surprised him and he jumped on the toilet and yelled for his mom.

Asprec now has 2.5 million followers, and credits his success to making evergreen content. “I did videos where people can relate in daily basis. And so people would watch it over and over again. And that’s where I got followers and viewers I guess.” he said. “I love when people smile when they see me do something that they like. And so I started doing it, I started uploading more videos like that, and mixed up my content. And people just started following me. And they liked it.”

After downloading TikTok, Asprec admired the diversity of talent, “Wow, people can go viral in so many different ways. And I was like, you know what, I’m going to try this out, and I didn’t expect that much for my videos to go viral.”

As a high school student, he runs track. He also loves school, and it is his most common setting for TikToks.

“When I blew up on TikTok, I was always scared because I hate getting noticed. And there’s been a lot of people taking pictures of me without me knowing. But my friends around me would tell me and I would be scared, because if they wanted pictures, they would just come up to me, right? And about the teachers, they would always be like, hey, how’s the TikTok career going? And I’ll be like, yes, it’s good. It’s going amazing. And teachers actually enjoy my TikToks. And they like like it and they would always congratulate me, with my followers and how far I came.”

His favorite subject is science for its broad base of knowledge.  He likes experimentation and the scientific process.

Asprec moved to the U.S. without knowing any English. “I did not know any words. I did not know what [nasty] even meant.” he used his phone to translate things, but struggled with going out to eat.

He enjoys photography and takes photos with his phone. After graduating high school he plans to expand his career as an influencer beyond TikTok and is considering going to college to become a nurse.  “Any time I need a video to watch on YouTube, it would always be about nursing. I’ve wanted to become a nurse since I was 10 years old.” he said.

Asprec’s cousin in California, aunt, and brother in the Philippines also studied nursing in college. His favorite musical artist is Nicki Minaj and he is afraid of spiders and ghosts.
